Veeam v13 Release: A New Beginning

Release Update (Today)
As of September 3, 2025, Veeam quietly released an early version of Veeam Backup & Replication v13, but with one important limitation: it’s available only as a Software Appliance (ISO/OVA), designed for greenfield deployments – meaning it’s not meant for upgrading existing V12 installations yet.

  • The early appliance version is downloadable from the Veeam site as both ISO and OVA.
  • This release excludes functionality like Cloud Connect and doesn’t support migration from earlier versions—so testing in a lab or POC environment is strongly advised.
  • The release corresponds to build 13.0.0.4967.

What’s Inside v13: Highlighting the New Features

1. A Modern Web UI

Veeam introduced an entirely new web client in v13, featuring:

  • Overview dashboards summarizing resiliency, platform health, and protection status.
  • Widgets like Protected Workloads and Top Repositories.
  • A sleek dark mode with high-contrast visuals for accessibility.

2. Redesigned Windows Console

The traditional Windows (fat-client) interface received a full visual overhaul:

  • Built with modern .NET UI technologies.
  • Includes dark mode, refreshed icons, and job graphs that are more visually engaging.

3. High Availability (HA) Capabilities

Veeam has finally responded to customer demand with HA support:

  • Aims to reduce failover time in case of service disruption.
  • Complements Veeam’s configuration-stored resilience model, enabling near-instant recovery.

4. Enhanced Access Management

Security and control get a boost with:

  • Identity Provider integration (e.g., Entra ID).
  • Advanced Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), allowing permission scopes down to specific users or VMs.
  • Eliminates the reliance on Enterprise Manager for role-based configurations.

5. Instant Cloud Recovery from Veeam Vault

This groundbreaking feature enables users to:

  • Recover any Windows or Linux VM backup as a native Azure VM in under five minutes.
  • Supports rapid disaster recovery, malware scanning, data classification, and more.

Full Release and What Comes After

  • A full General Availability (GA) release—covering Windows and the complete Veeam Data Platform (v13.0.1)—is expected in Q4 2025, including migration support and full functionality.
  • The beta appliance program began earlier, gathering broad community feedback and over 1,500 downloads in just three weeks.
  • Veeam advised administrators to delay production rollouts until stability improves —common wisdom for any major new release.
  • System requirements are tightening: V13 drops support for older OS versions and sets minimums like vSphere 7.0 for both ESXi & vCenter, Windows Server 2012 & 2012 R2, and newer Linux builds; support for V12 is extended through early 2027 for those requiring more time.

I’ll be posting a blog post shortly on Veeam’s Deprecated & Discontinued features on v13.
